History will remember Mikhail Gorbachev as the leader who brought openness (glasnost) and economic restructuring (perestroika) to the Soviet Union, ushering in the end of communism. While in Rhode Island (US) last week to speak at the Carnegie Abbey Club, Gorbachev, 75, met Time correspondent to talk about his new book, Understanding Perestroika, Russia under Vladimir Putin and life after the death in 1999 of his beloved wife Raisa.
