The «Ballets Russes» is still an emotive and exciting phrase. It evokes the exotic world created by Serge Diaghilev and his dancers, which not even the more truly Russian performances by Kirov and Bolshoi can outdo. Diaghilev’s troupe established, during its 20 years, the unalter-able public image that ballet was a peculiarly Russian art.
