Is Russia friend or foe?

The Washington Times.

OK, so what do we have? Iraq is on the brink of civil war. Al Qaeda shows no sign of dissipation and the threat of major terror attacks remains very high. Iran is ignoring possible sanctions and is pushing hard for its nuclear program. The Taliban is getting more and more active in Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere. North Korea already has or will soon have nuclear weapons. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Bolivian President Evo Morales are engaged in harsh anti-American rhetoric that would make the almighty Soviet politburo envious.

Interesting article.

However, I think you are dead wrong in your blog summary to cite a "russophobic" bias in the west, except among a few senior individuals in the US Congress.

Russias view of the US (and west) is much more negative, than the US view of Russia. This is repeatedly shown in opinion polls and demonstrated in media articles from each nation. I can show this research from Russian agencies such as Levada (and others).

I know it is quite popular for Russians to imagine otherwise, of course. The news media in Russia sells lots of newspapers promoting the idea that the US and Western Europe has some hateful agenda and bias against Russians. It just doesn't exist, however.

Despite these idiots in the US Congress, I don't believe Bush is going to take any actions against Russia. 2006 is an election year in Congress, so these people like to appear strong in foreign policy. Putin could try to make Bush's job easier in selling this to the US Congress, of course.
